How to convert CGPA into percentage

Multiply your CGPA by 9.5 if you follow the CBSE method. For example, 7.8 × 9.5 = 74.10%. If your university publishes its own rule, use that instead.

  1. Take your CGPA from your latest grade card (the cumulative figure, not one semester’s SGPA).
  2. Find your board or university’s formula, usually printed on the back of the grade card. If there isn’t one, use × 9.5.
  3. Apply it and write the result to two decimals. VTU: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Anna University: CGPA × 10.

CGPA to percentage formula: pick the right one first

Most CGPA converters online apply one multiplier to everyone. That is the most common reason students quote the wrong percentage on a job form. The rule depends on who awarded the grade, and the gap between rules is large enough to decide whether you clear a cut-off.

Here is the same 8.0 CGPA under each rule:

Board / universityOfficial formula8.0 CGPA becomes
CBSE Class 10 (CCE scheme)CGPA × 9.576.00%
Anna University, many autonomous collegesCGPA × 1080.00%
VTU (Karnataka)(CGPA − 0.75) × 1072.50%
4-point scale, no official ruleGPA ÷ 4 × 1003.2 GPA = 80.00%

The same 8.0 swings between 72.5% and 80.0%. That 7.5-point spread decides whether you clear a 75% eligibility cut-off, so check which rule applies before you write a number on an application.

Where to find your official formula

  • The back of your grade card or transcript. Many universities print the conversion rule there, often next to the grade-point table.
  • Your university’s academic regulations (also called the ordinance or scheme of examination) for your year of admission. Rules sometimes change between batches.
  • The examination section or Controller of Examinations. Many universities issue a percentage conversion certificate on request. For government jobs and admissions abroad, that certificate carries more weight than any calculator.

If your university states a formula in the form a × CGPA + b, choose Custom in the calculator and enter both numbers. If it states no rule at all, CBSE’s × 9.5 is the most widely accepted fallback in India.

6.2 to 10 CGPA in percentage

These are the values students look up most. Each card gives the CBSE answer first, then the other two rules for comparison.

6.2 CGPA in percentage

6.2 CGPA is 58.90% (6.2 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
62.00%
VTU rule
54.50%

The class depends on the rule. With × 10 it is 62.00%, a First Class. With CBSE it is 58.90% and with VTU 54.50%, both Second Class, so check your university’s formula before ticking “First Class” on a form.

7.2 CGPA in percentage

7.2 CGPA is 68.40% (7.2 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
72.00%
VTU rule
64.50%

A First Class under all three rules. Only the × 10 rule (72.00%) takes it past 70%, so for a “70% aggregate” requirement the formula decides the answer.

7.95 CGPA in percentage

7.95 CGPA is 75.53% (7.95 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
79.50%
VTU rule
72.00%

Sits right on the distinction boundary: 75.53% under CBSE clears 75%, but VTU’s 72.00% does not. If a form asks for “distinction”, the answer depends entirely on your university’s rule.

8 CGPA in percentage

8 CGPA is 76.00% (8 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
80.00%
VTU rule
72.50%

Crosses the 75% distinction mark under CBSE (76.00%) and × 10 (80.00%), but not under VTU (72.50%), where you need 8.25.

8.2 CGPA in percentage

8.2 CGPA is 77.90% (8.2 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
82.00%
VTU rule
74.50%

Useful in reverse: a “78% and above” requirement needs 8.21 CGPA under CBSE, so 8.2 (77.90%) falls just short, while the × 10 rule gives a clear 82.00%.

9.2 CGPA in percentage

9.2 CGPA is 87.40% (9.2 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
92.00%
VTU rule
84.50%

Comfortably above 85% under CBSE. The × 10 rule gives 92.00%, which matters when a scholarship or programme sets a 90% bar.

10 CGPA in percentage

10 CGPA is 95.00% (10 × 9.5)

CGPA × 10
100.00%
VTU rule
92.50%

A perfect CGPA is not 100% under CBSE’s rule; it works out to 95.00% (see why CBSE uses 9.5, below). Only the × 10 rule gives 100%.

Why does CBSE multiply by 9.5?

Under its Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) scheme, CBSE graded Class 10 students in bands. The top grade, A1, covered marks from 91 to 100 and carried 10 grade points. When CBSE looked at the actual marks of students in that band, their average came to about 95. Dividing 95 by 10 grade points gives the factor of 9.5. CBSE then used that factor across the whole scale as an indicative equivalence, and its own grade sheets describe it that way.

That origin explains two things. First, 9.5 is an average, not an exact rule: a student with a 10 CGPA could have scored anywhere from 91% to 100%, but the formula reports 95%. Second, the factor came from CBSE’s own marks data. Universities with different marking patterns have no reason to inherit it, which is why many publish their own rules.

SGPA to percentage: how to convert a semester score

An SGPA sits on the same grade-point scale as your CGPA; it simply covers one semester. Universities therefore convert it with the same formula they use for CGPA:

  • CBSE-style rule: SGPA × 9.5, so 8.6 SGPA = 81.70%
  • Direct rule (Anna University and others): SGPA × 10, so 8.6 SGPA = 86.00%
  • VTU: (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, so 8.6 SGPA = 78.50%

Some grade cards label this figure the “semester CGPA”; it is the same number. To see your SGPA in percentage, stay on the calculator’s “CGPA → %” tab and type it into the input box.

Where students go wrong is the next step. Some forms, particularly for internships and campus placements, ask for a percentage for each semester. Others ask for an aggregate. For semester-wise boxes, convert each SGPA on its own. For the aggregate, do not average your semester percentages: work out your credit-weighted CGPA first (see how to calculate CGPA from SGPA), then convert that single figure. Averaging the percentages ignores the fact that a 26-credit semester counts for more than an 18-credit one.

Worked examples

1. CBSE Class 10: 9.6 CGPA

9.6 × 9.5 = 91.20%. Under the direct rule the same grade card would read 96.00%, a 4.8-point difference. The gap between the two rules is always half your CGPA, so it grows as your grades rise.

2. VTU engineering: 7.85 CGPA

First subtract 0.75: 7.85 − 0.75 = 7.10. Then multiply by 10: 71.00%. The common mistake here is using 7.85 × 9.5, which gives 74.58% and overstates the score by about 3.6 points.

3. Anna University: 8.35 CGPA

Anna University uses the direct rule, so 8.35 × 10 = 83.50%. Someone applying the CBSE factor by habit would write 79.33% and undersell themselves by more than four points, enough to miss an 80% shortlist.

4. Working backwards from a cut-off

A recruiter asks for “65% or above throughout” and your CBSE-pattern grade card shows CGPA. The minimum you need is 65 ÷ 9.5 = 6.84 CGPA. Under the direct × 10 rule you would need 6.50, and under VTU’s rule 7.25.

How to convert percentage into CGPA

To go the other way, reverse the formula: divide by the multiplier and undo any constant. For CBSE, CGPA = percentage ÷ 9.5. For VTU, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10 + 0.75. The calculator’s “% → CGPA” tab works as a percentage to CGPA calculator and shows the same steps.

What CGPA counts as first class or distinction?

Most Indian universities classify results by percentage: 75% and above is First Class with Distinction, 60–74.99% is First Class, 50–59.99% is Second Class and 40–49.99% is Pass Class. Some institutions, especially autonomous ones, define the classes directly in CGPA, so check your regulations. Here are the minimum CGPAs for each class under each rule:

ClassMin. %CBSE× 10VTU
First Class with Distinction 75% 7.89 7.50 8.25
First Class 60% 6.32 6.00 6.75
Second Class 50% 5.26 5.00 5.75
Pass Class 40% 4.21 4.00 4.75

How to calculate CGPA from SGPA

Your CGPA is not a plain average of semester SGPAs. Semesters carry different numbers of credits, and a heavy semester should count for more. The correct method is a credit-weighted average:

CGPA = Σ (SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ credits

Example: Semester 1 has SGPA 7.8 over 22 credits, Semester 2 has 8.4 over 24 credits and Semester 3 has 8.1 over 20 credits.

  • Weighted points: 7.8 × 22 + 8.4 × 24 + 8.1 × 20 = 171.6 + 201.6 + 162 = 535.2
  • Total credits: 22 + 24 + 20 = 66
  • CGPA = 535.2 ÷ 66 = 8.11

A plain average would give 8.10. The gap is small here because the credit loads are similar. It grows when one semester carries far more credits than the others, as project or internship semesters often do. Total credits are listed on each semester’s grade card. If you leave the credit boxes empty in the “SGPA → CGPA” tab, the calculator falls back to a simple average.

How to convert CGPA into percentage out of 4

A CGPA “out of 4” comes from the US system and from Indian institutions that adopted it, such as some private universities and business schools. There is no single official conversion, so two methods are in use:

  1. Proportional (most common): percentage = CGPA ÷ 4 × 100. A 3.2 becomes 80.00% and a 3.5 becomes 87.50%. In the calculator, choose “Proportional” and set the scale to 4.
  2. Rescale to 10, then apply × 9.5: some Indian application forms ask you to multiply a 4-point CGPA by 2.5 first and then use the CBSE rule. 3.2 × 2.5 = 8.0, and 8.0 × 9.5 = 76.00%. This gives a lower figure, so use it only when the form’s instructions say so.

If your institution printed its own table on the transcript, that table beats both methods. The proportional method assumes grades are spread evenly across the scale, which they rarely are, so label any result as approximate. The same approach works for 5- and 7-point scales:

4.0 scale≈ %5.0 scale≈ %7.0 scale≈ %

Mistakes that cost students at document verification

  1. Using 9.5 for a university that has its own rule. HR teams and admission offices compare your stated percentage with the university’s formula. A mismatch looks like inflation, even when it was an honest mistake.
  2. Rounding up. 59.85% is not 60%. Write the two-decimal figure and let the institution apply its own rounding policy.
  3. Quoting your best SGPA as your CGPA. Forms that ask for “aggregate” or “overall” mean the cumulative figure across all semesters.
  4. Converting a CGPA that is still changing. If you are mid-course, say so, for example “7.9 CGPA up to 6th semester (≈ 75.05%)”.
  5. Leaving out the method. When a form has room, add the formula in brackets: “80.75% (8.5 CGPA × 9.5, as per CBSE)”. It saves a verification email.

Applying abroad?

Do not convert your CGPA yourself for foreign universities or credential evaluators. Agencies such as WES assess your original transcript with their own methods, and admission offices usually want the grades exactly as your university issued them. Report your CGPA and scale as they appear (for example “8.4 / 10”) and attach your university’s conversion certificate if you have one.

Frequently asked questions

Is multiplying CGPA by 9.5 correct for every university?

No. The 9.5 multiplier is CBSE’s rule for its Class 10 CGPA. Many universities publish their own conversion — Anna University uses CGPA × 10 and VTU uses (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Use the formula printed on your grade card or in your university’s regulations; fall back to 9.5 only when your institution does not specify one.

How much percentage is 8.5 CGPA?

8.5 CGPA is 80.75% with the CBSE formula (8.5 × 9.5), 85.00% with the direct × 10 method, and 77.50% under VTU’s (8.5 − 0.75) × 10.

My grade card shows both a CGPA and a percentage. Which should I use?

Use the percentage printed by your university. It is the official figure and needs no conversion. Use a converter only when the grade card gives a CGPA alone.

Does my percentage change after revaluation or a supplementary exam?

Yes. A changed grade changes that semester’s SGPA, which changes your CGPA. Convert again from the updated grade card, and update any applications that still show the old figure.

What CGPA do I need for 75 percent?

You need 7.89 CGPA under the CBSE formula (75 ÷ 9.5), 7.50 under CGPA × 10, and 8.25 under VTU’s rule (75 ÷ 10 + 0.75).

Is 7.5 CGPA a first class?

Usually yes. 7.5 CGPA converts to 71.25% (CBSE), 75.00% (× 10) or 67.50% (VTU). Most Indian universities treat 60% and above as First Class and 75% and above as First Class with Distinction, but the exact cut-offs are set by each university.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures one semester. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) combines all semesters completed so far, weighted by the credits in each semester. Convert your CGPA — not an individual SGPA — when a form asks for your overall percentage.

Can I convert a 4.0 GPA to a percentage with this calculator?

Yes, with the “Proportional” formula and a grading scale of 4. Treat the result as an estimate: US colleges have no single official GPA-to-percentage formula, and a 3.6 usually reflects letter grades rather than an exact mark.

Should I round my converted percentage up?

No. Report the figure to two decimal places exactly as the formula gives it. Eligibility checks such as “60% and above” are usually strict, so 59.85% does not qualify as 60%, and rounding it on an application can lead to rejection at document verification.

Does this calculator save the marks I enter?

No. The conversion runs in your browser as you type. If JavaScript is turned off, the server works out the result for that single request and does not store it.
