Sales tax

Enter a price and a tax rate greater than zero.

Sales tax formula

  • Sales tax = price × tax rate
  • Total = price + sales tax
  • Reverse (inclusive): pre-tax price = total ÷ (1 + rate)

Tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive pricing

Many US prices are shown tax-exclusive (tax added at checkout), while many other regions show tax-inclusive prices. Switch modes to add or extract tax accordingly.

Combining local rates

Enter state, local and special-district components and the calculator sums them into a combined rate. For pricing decisions, pair this with the product pricing calculator and profit margin calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the pre-tax price by the tax rate to get the tax, then add it to the price for the total. For example, $100 at 8% is $8 tax and $108 total.

What is tax-inclusive vs tax-exclusive?

Tax-exclusive means the price shown is before tax (tax is added). Tax-inclusive means the price already contains tax; this calculator can extract the tax from an inclusive total.

Does it know my local sales tax rate?

No — you enter the rate. Sales tax rates vary by state, county and district and by item, so CalcBundle does not guess a local rate. You can also split state, local and special-district rates.
