Where your gross pay goes
Based on United States (Federal) rules for tax year 2025.
This calculator provides an estimate based on the selected jurisdiction, tax year and information entered. Actual net pay can vary with state/local taxes and employer specifics.
Gross vs net pay
Gross pay is your salary before deductions; net (take-home) pay is what remains after taxes and deductions. This calculator walks from one to the other.
Payroll taxes
In the US, employees pay 6.2% Social Security (up to the annual wage base) and 1.45% Medicare on wages, with an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax above high-income thresholds. See the split for both sides in the payroll tax calculator.
Deductions
Pre-tax deductions lower your taxable income (and thus income tax); post-tax deductions do not. To understand the income-tax portion, see the income tax calculator and tax bracket calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is take-home pay?
Take-home (net) pay is what lands in your bank after income tax, payroll taxes (Social Security and Medicare) and any pre- and post-tax deductions are removed from your gross salary.
What are pre-tax vs post-tax deductions?
Pre-tax deductions (like retirement or health premiums) reduce your taxable income before income tax is calculated. Post-tax deductions come out after taxes and do not reduce taxable income.
Does this include state income tax?
No. It estimates US federal income tax plus Social Security and Medicare. State and local income taxes vary and are not included.
